St John Ambulance Cymru’s support saves the Vale of Glamorgan over 600 unnecessary ambulance callouts in just 7 months

Vale of Glamorgan Telecare and St John Ambulance Cymru have been working together to reduce response times when vulnerable adults fall at home.

The St John Ambulance Cymru Falls and Welfare Response service has been supporting the Telecare service in the Vale of Glamorgan since October and it has had a hugely positive impact on response times, as well as freeing up invaluable ambulances to respond to other incidents in the community.

Vale of Glamorgan Telecare offers a range of services for vulnerable adults, using digital alarms for individuals who may experience an incident or medical emergency at home. When alarms are raised by pressing a button, individuals are automatically dialled into a 24-hour monitoring centre. The operator will then dispatch either the St John Ambulance Cymru Falls and Welfare response service or, in a medical emergency, the emergency services will be contacted.

The St John Ambulance Cymru Falls and Welfare Response service has been running since 2018. The service plays a pivotal role in supporting people, like those individuals who are supported by the Telecare service, when they need it most.

St John Ambulance Cymru responders perform an assessment of the patients and if appropriate, lift them safely using Mangar Camel or Eagle lifting cushions. This means that unnecessary ambulance visits have been reduced, freeing up ambulances for more severe incidents in the community.

Since October 2022 the partnership has reduced response times dramatically. The Falls Responders have seen 700 Telecare patients who have had an 88% stay at home rate, meaning unnecessary hospital visit are avoided. This means the scheme has saved a front line ambulance being called approximately 616 times!

Gary Pyke, Service Development Manager for the Vale of Glamorgan commented, "Partnering with St John Ambulance Cymru has revolutionised our service in the Vale of Glamorgan. With Telecare, there are no more endless waits for assistance.

Within 45 minutes, a friendly, skilled professional is at their doorstep.

It's transformed the service, prevented ambulance and hospital visits, and enabled citizens to lead more independent lives.”

Since October, St John Ambulance Cymru’s Falls Service has travelled 16,000 miles responding to telecare alarms in the county.

Helen Coulthard, Head of Ambulance Operations at St John Ambulance Cymru commented, "With our team of highly trained and dedicated Falls Responders, we are committed to providing safe, timely and patient focused care to those who have fallen.

We are very proud to provide the Falls and Welfare Response Service to the Vale of Glamorgan council."

The partnership is just one of the revolutionary ways in which these organisation are lifting pressure from the Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust whilst delivering a high standard of care for vulnerable members of the community.
