Swansea’s Purple Flag status has recently been renewed, recognising the city’s vibrant and safe night-time economy. A key part of this thriving night-time economy is the Gerallt Davies Help Point.
The help point aims to support individuals in-need whilst out and about in Swansea’s busy town centre. It is supported by a team of dedicated volunteers who provide first class care to the people of Swansea from 10pm-4am on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Further support is provided on busy nights like bank holidays or large event days.
The Gerallt Davies Help Point is supported by volunteers from St John Ambulance Cymru and the South Wales Police. It is funded by the Swansea Bay Health Board and the Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust. Volunteers work together to provide help to those who need minor first aid treatment or to those who are too intoxicated, diverting them away from A&E. This means that pressure is lifted from the local emergency services, and the Swansea nightlife is a safer place for all.
Swansea has had its Purple Flag status since February 2015, and it was recently renewed following an independent assessment of the city. The Purple Flag initiative aims to improve the quality and safety of cities between the times of 5pm and 5am, awarding the cleanest, safest places. Swansea was the first place in Wales to achieve the Purple Flag status, and its renewal shows the effort made by all to ensure the city is kept clean, attractive, accessible and safe.
“The Gerallt Davies Help Point formed a key part of Swansea’s recent successful Purple Flag bid” says Lisa Wells, Swansea City Centre Manager, “The independent assessors toured the facility when they visited the area and were encouraged by what they saw.
Favourable comments were received on the operation and the proactive, partnership approach being taken locally to support Swansea’s vibrant evening and night-time economy and mitigate the demand on ambulance and A&E services.”
St John Ambulance Cymru volunteers support the Gerallt Davies Help Point week in, week out, alongside the other organisations’ volunteers. The charity is proud to have played such a key role in the Purple Flag bid. With the aim to make communities across Wales safer places for all, St John Ambulance Cymru is thrilled to see that their volunteers’ hard work is making a real difference in the city.

Mae statws Baner Borffor Abertawe wedi'i adnewyddu'n ddiweddar, gan gydnabod economi liw nos fywiog a diogel y ddinas. Rhan allweddol o’r economi nos ffyniannus hon yw Man Cymorth Gerallt Davies.
Nod y pwynt cymorth yw cefnogi unigolion mewn angen tra allan yng nghanol tref brysur Abertawe. Fe'i cefnogir gan dîm o wirfoddolwyr ymroddedig sy'n darparu gofal o'r radd flaenaf i bobl Abertawe o 10pm-4am ar ddydd Mercher a dydd Sadwrn. Darperir cymorth pellach ar nosweithiau prysur fel gwyliau banc neu ddiwrnodau digwyddiadau mawr.
Cefnogir Man Cymorth Gerallt Davies gan wirfoddolwyr o St John Ambulance Cymru a Heddlu De Cymru. Mae'n cael ei ariannu gan Fwrdd Iechyd Bae Abertawe ac Ymddiriedolaeth GIG Gwasanaethau Ambiwlans Cymru. Mae gwirfoddolwyr yn gweithio gyda'i gilydd i roi cymorth i'r rhai sydd angen mân driniaeth cymorth cyntaf neu i'r rhai sy'n rhy feddw, gan eu dargyfeirio i ffwrdd o adrannau damweiniau ac achosion brys. Mae hyn yn golygu bod pwysau’n cael ei godi gan y gwasanaethau brys lleol, ac mae bywyd nos Abertawe yn lle mwy diogel i bawb.
Mae Abertawe wedi cael ei statws Baner Borffor ers mis Chwefror 2015, ac fe'i hadnewyddwyd yn ddiweddar yn dilyn asesiad annibynnol o'r ddinas.
Nod menter y Faner Borffor yw gwella ansawdd a diogelwch dinasoedd rhwng 5pm a 5am, gan ddyfarnu'r lleoedd glanaf a mwyaf diogel. Abertawe oedd y lle cyntaf yng Nghymru i ennill statws y Faner Borffor, ac mae ei hadnewyddu yn dangos yr ymdrech a wnaed gan bawb i sicrhau bod y ddinas yn cael ei chadw'n lân, yn ddeniadol, yn hygyrch ac yn ddiogel.
“Roedd Man Cymorth Gerallt Davies yn rhan allweddol o gais llwyddiannus diweddar Abertawe am y Faner Borffor” meddai Lisa Wells, Rheolwr Canol Dinas Abertawe, “Teithiodd yr aseswyr annibynnol o amgylch y cyfleuster pan ymwelon nhw â’r ardal a chawsant eu calonogi gan yr hyn a welsant.
Cafwyd sylwadau ffafriol ar yr ymgyrch a'r dull partneriaeth rhagweithiol sy'n cael ei ddefnyddio'n lleol i gefnogi economi fywiog gyda'r nos ac yn y nos Abertawe a lliniaru'r galw ar wasanaethau ambiwlans ac adrannau damweiniau ac achosion brys.”
Mae gwirfoddolwyr St John Ambulance Cymru yn cefnogi Man Cymorth Gerallt Davies wythnos ar ôl wythnos, ochr yn ochr â gwirfoddolwyr y sefydliadau eraill. Mae'r elusen yn falch o fod wedi chwarae rhan mor allweddol yng nghais y Faner Borffor. Gyda’r nod o wneud cymunedau ledled Cymru yn lleoedd mwy diogel i bawb, mae St John Ambulance Cymru wrth eu bodd o weld bod gwaith caled eu gwirfoddolwyr yn gwneud gwahaniaeth gwirioneddol yn y ddinas.
