About out Mental Health First Aid Refresher course

Our 4-hour Adult Mental Health First Aid Refresher course (MHFA Refresher) will give delegates the opportunity to refresh their knowledge and skills gained from their previous 12-hour Adult Mental Health First Aid course. 

It will refresh the delegates skills needed to spot signs of mental illness, giving them the confidence to approach and support a person who needs assistance owing to mental ill health.

Delegates will refresh their understanding of mental health factors that can affect wellbeing and explore what they can do to get their colleague the right support.

This Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Wales course is licensed and developed by MHFA (Wales). Please note that if you are in England, then you will need to book a course endorsed by MHFA England.

Delegates must have previously completed a 2-Day Mental Health First Aid course, and will need to bring with them their certificate as proof. Otherwise, they will not be able to join the MHFA refresher training.

Who is it for?

This course is for delegates who have previously completed the 12 hour Adult Mental Health course, within the last 3 years.

How is it assessed?

This course has no formal assessment involved in order to complete it successfully. However our experienced St John Ambulance Cymru instructors will support you every step of the way and ensure you are comfortable with the knowledge you have learned.

Certification

This course will extend the certification previously gained by a further 3 years. All delegates will be issued with an Adult Mental Health First Aid certificate awarded by Mental Health First Aid Wales. The certificate is valid for 3 years.

Our mental health first aid refresher course is one of the leading mental health training courses in Wales. In the UK, St John Ambulance is one of the voluntary aid societies (VAS) who are recognised by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) as standard setters for first aid training in accordance with the Health and Safety (First Aid) regulations 1981. We don't require external accreditation through an Awarding Organisation.

Mental health is just as important as physical health. Becoming a certified mental health first aider was a fantastic idea that allowed delegates to offer meaningful help to colleagues that are struggling. However, skills fade over time, especially if they are not used often. That's why refresher training is important - it will allow you to refresh and practice applying the mental health skills that can help colleagues and potentially save their life.

The original certificate from our St John Ambulance Cymru is valid for three years. After this expires, you will no longer be a certified first aider for mental health and technically cannot provide mental health support. After completing our refresher training course, your certificate will be valid for a further three years. This is the same for physical first aid too. Those that are workplace first aiders after successfully completing a first aid at work (FAW) or emergency first aid at work (EFAW) course must also take a requalification course. Every business and organisation should be committed to supporting the wellbeing of its workforce. Your designated mental health first aiders, such as line managers and staff reps, should be confident in talking about mental health with their colleagues.
