Employers have a legal responsibility to provide a duty of care to their employees and support their wellbeing. They must make sure that they are committed to supporting employees not just physically but also mentally. Poor mental health has the potential to be considered a disability. This means that employers may have further legal requirements to make reasonable adjustments according to relevant equality legislation if an employee is suffering from a mental health issue. There are countless benefits to ensuring mental health at work is well looked after. For example, employers may see improved productivity, confidence, and working relationships, and a reduction in absence-related costs. Ensuring employees feel respected and well-looked after will facilitate a happier workplace environment and reduce the impact of mental illness in the workplace.
