Volunteers from North Wales and Powys are to be celebrated at a regional investiture service taking place at St Asaph Cathedral today (25th September).

Volunteers from our charity are being awarded by the Order of St John in Wales for their service to their community through their charitable work.

Colin Thwaites (76) of Colwyn Bay and Iris Brown (72) of Bettws Cedewen, will receive the Order’s Gilt Medal for 50 years’ volunteer service. Four more volunteers, Brian Topping (70), Christine Townley (62), Kevin Jones (59) and Dr Timothy McVey (65) will also receive long service awards.

Hannah Catherall-Jones (12), will be awarded the charity’s Super Badger Award, the highest accolade a Badger can achieve as part of the charity’s youth programmes and five Cadets, Callum Davies (18), Dylan Hall (17), Megan Maddocks (20), Georgina Seller (17) and Harri Slaughter (16), will receive their Grand Prior Award; a culmination of three years’ work completing twenty-four subjects from a comprehensive development programme.

A special certificate of commendation will be presented by the Prior for Wales to Danielle Roberts (19) from Deeside, for showing poise and maturity after responding to a road traffic collision during a driving lesson. Danielle put the casualty into the recovery position and stayed with them and their family for two-hours and assisted emergency services with their investigations before the casualty was taken to hospital for further treatment.

Dr Tim McVey will be promoted to Commander grade within the Order of St John and five other volunteers, Emma Felton, Az Hughes-Jackson, Dewi Lloyd and Cynthia McVey will be admitted as Members into the Order.

“We continue to be in awe of the exceptional actions and service our volunteers give to their communities and to those in need.

We’re delighted to be presenting them with their awards at our North Wales Investiture Service today and thank them for their extraordinary work.”

St John Ambulance Cymru, Chief Executive Officer, Helen Smith

Our annual investiture usually takes place at Llandaff Cathedral, Cardiff, in June but was cancelled due to the ongoing pandemic. Instead, we're holding several smaller services across Wales.
