Just like our adult volunteers, Cadets and Badgers meet in their Divisions every week to learn about first aid – and many other fun or important topics.

Youth Leaders run these weekly sessions and support the young people within them. Youth Helpers support the Leaders with these sessions by supervising the young people and supporting them with activities.

What running a weekly session involves:

  • Registering the Cadets or Badgers as they arrive and welcoming them.
  • Leading activities from a list of options and resources on our SharePoint.

Youth Leaders also look after their units by:

  • Requesting role changes (when your young people age out of their Units).
  • Submitting certificates for young people’s achievements on a termly basis.
  • Collecting consent forms once a year.
  • Helping sign young people up to volunteering opportunities they like.

Finally, Youth Helpers and Youth Leaders are asked to keep their training up to date by completing a Children & Young People and Safeguarding Update once a year.

What if I want to do more?

Then please do!

Our Youth Helpers and Youth Leaders have so many skills, we love it when they can share them with our Badgers and Cadets. As a result, we are open to both bringing visitors into our Divisions or taking our young people out on trips or activities.

Organising these is straightforward:

  • If you’re bringing in a visitor, check in with your Divisional Manager first. Then, ensure they’re always chaperoned while in the Unit and place their details in that week’s register visitor log.
  • If you want to take Badgers or Cadets out and about, register your trip with the National Team by completing a form and a risk assessment. Then, collect permission forms before the day of the trip.

We also love teamwork! Your Unit doesn’t operate alone; you will often have an adult Unit attached to yours and many other Divisions in your county. You can always join together with them to plan a trip or exciting opportunity for your Badgers and Cadets.

For example, we also have resources for running:

  • Leadership courses for Badgers and Cadets themselves.
  • Peer Demonstrator courses for Cadets.
  • And First Aid competitions as of Summer 2026!

Can I also learn first aid?

Absolutely you can!

Often, adults meet on the same evening as Badgers and Cadets, just later.

As a result, you can also join in with the first aid learning that takes place there and gain an Event Responder qualification for yourself.

Still unsure if this is for you?

If you’re interested but unsure whether you have the right skills, don’t worry! We train our Youth Leaders and Helpers so they can feel confident in their ability to take on these roles. All we ask for is a positive and friendly attitude, and enthusiasm for volunteering with young people.
