Mental Health Advocate

About our Mental Health Advocate course

On this Mental Health Advocate course, you will gain the skills to help build a workplace that proactively supports mental wellbeing. This one-day course empowers individuals to become visible, confident, and proactive champions for mental health at work.

Designed to complement Mental Health First Aid provision in workplaces, this course encourages early intervention and helps create a culture of peer support and reduced stigma. You will leave equipped to lead wellbeing conversations, signpost support, and act as a positive influence within your team.

This course qualifies learners as Mental Health Advocates, preparing them to role model healthy behaviours, start supportive conversations, and promote mental health and wellbeing across the organisation. Unlike Mental Health First Aiders who may focus on crisis response, Advocates help shape everyday culture, offering informal support, running wellbeing “toolbox talks”, and encouraging open dialogue.

Who is it for?

This course is assessed through active participation in discussions, practical activities, and scenario based exercises throughout the day, rather than a formal examination.

Certification

Delegates that complete the training course successfully will be awarded a mental health advocate certificate.

The Mental Health Advocate course is one day long and teaches delegates to role model healthy behaviours, start supportive conversations, and promote mental health and wellbeing across an organisation. The Mental Health First Aid course is two days long and covers all the content from the Advocate course, but has a greater focus on responding to mental health crises. You will only be a certified Mental Health First Aider by completing the Mental Health First Aid course. We recommend that organisations have both Mental Health First Aiders and Mental Health Advocates.

St John Ambulance Cymru is a trusted training provider with training centres located conveniently across Wales. We can deliver training at your workplace if six or more employees require it. Our qualified trainers draw on real life experience, and we ensure our courses are hands-on, practical, and engaging.

Mental Health Advocates provide a support network within the workplace for both colleagues and Mental Health First Aiders. They help identify early signs and symptoms of mental ill health and can signpost individuals to appropriate support such as Mental Health First Aiders. They also play a key role in reducing stigma, promoting open conversations about mental health, and encouraging healthy behaviours across the organisation, helping to create a more supportive and positive working environment.
