Mike Flanagan (59) from Bridgend, laced up his walking boots and battled torrential rain as he took on 100Km to fundraise for us.

Step by step, Mike completed his five-day trek from Swansea to Newport but faced a series of challenges along the way.

Mike, needed replacement boots early into his challenge and his trek was nearly postponed after a bout of vasculitis, where his legs became itchy and swollen.

Day three was the toughest for Mike as he faced severe gales walking from Cowbridge to Cardiff along the A48.

But it was all worth it, says the former firefighter, who’s raised £1,756 so far.

“I knew it would be tough, but I’m not sure I anticipated just how much the weather would affect the whole thing.

A few friends met me along the way and gave me a much-needed boost when I needed it most.

The support of everyone sponsoring me really kept me going, even on the wettest and coldest day, I knew that I didn’t want to let anyone down and their support really helped me push through.

Would I do it again? No. Was it worth it? Absolutely!”

Mike’s fundraising to support our staff and volunteers, who've been on the front line in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

We've been delivering vital support, giving their time and expertise to Wales’ field hospitals, providing care at vaccination centres, and continuing their work of providing those in need with transport to and from hospital.

“We couldn’t do what we do without the support and passion of fundraisers like Mike. Our lifesaving work in communities across Wales depends on donations and we’re so grateful to have amazing people raising funds for our charity.

Mike took on a huge challenge in walking 100km and his determination to succeed is something he should be extremely proud of. His commitment and support of those who sponsored him to smash his goal and raise nearly £2000 will help us save lives and teach others how to do the same in his local community and beyond."
