St John Ambulance Cymru is highlighting the huge contribution nurses make to support our work in communities across Wales, as the charity prepares to mark International Nurses’ Day 2025 on May 12th.

This year, the first aid charity for Wales will be celebrating the nurses who volunteer on its behalf with a special thank you message from senior leaders, while also telling the stories of those who balance their role in the nursing profession with their volunteer efforts on its social media channels.

St John Ambulance Cymru Chief Executive, Richard Lee said:

“We are extremely fortunate to be supported by around 100 registered nurses, who last year alone provided 3,000 hours of community support right across Wales.

“As well as volunteering their precious time to support people who need help and delivering our mission to make Wales a community of lifesavers, they bring with them more than 1,600 years of nursing experience and account for more than half of the healthcare professionals who support our first aiders.

“We are proud of the work we do alongside our friends at the Royal College of Nursing to create the next generation of nurses though our contribution to the Kings Nursing Cadet Scheme. Many of our nurses tell me they prepared for their nursing career through youth activity with St John.

“We simply cannot thank our nurses enough for all the expert treatment they provide to patients, the specialist advice they give us, the training they deliver to our St John People and everything they do to support people across Wales. Diolch o galon!”

International Nurses’ Day is celebrated on May 12th every year to commemorate the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth, and is held to raise awareness of the profession and the challenges nurses face.

As part of the events to mark the occasion, St John Ambulance Cymru will be represented at the 60th Florence Nightingale Commemoration Service to be held at Westminster Abbey on May 12th.
